What Is Carmelite Spirituality?

Carmelite Spirituality – In the 12th century on Mt. Carmel, two Saints, John of The Cross and Teresa of Avila began the Carmelite Order. They wrote spiritual classics about the importance of suppression of the desires for divine union with God. And about the importance of prayer and spending time with God. These important writings set the base of the Carmalite Order. Which a Christian order of Monks, who practice Carmelite Spirituality.

Carmelite Spirituality

Let’s start with what Carmelite Spirituality is not. Well, the Carmalite Order is not a sect, which can be entered only by elites. Therefore, anyone with the divine calling can participate and become a Carmalite Monk. They are Christians and pray for the One True God and the Carmalite Saints.

There are 3 very important Saints in Carmelite Spirituality:

Carmelite Spirituality

St. Therese (Doctor Of The Church) – she was a loving and kind nun. Who found her vocation and Union with God. She wrote many books about the importance of love. In her book, “Story of a Soul” she describes how did she transform her soul through love.

St. John of The Cross – he was another Doctor of The Church. And he was a great teacher of Christians looking for salvation and union with God. Just like St. Therese, St. John of The Cross also preached the importance of love. And how love can transform a soul and bring it closer to God. Your love for God creates a marriage between you and Him. Which is the most important link between a human being and God. It is the Ultimate Union. But this union can be obtained only by getting rid of other loves from your life. Which means giving up all your desires. And living only to love and please God.

St. Teresa – the 3rd Doctor of Church. She describes the importance of your relationship with God and Christ. Which can be established only by hard mental prayer. Therefore, the two important paths toward Union with God are love and prayer. In other words, loving only God and praying to Him. So, you will establish the most powerful link with God. St. Teresa also explains the signs of progress in your path towards union. One of the most visible signs is putting your self last. And putting God and other human beings first. Helping others.

Carmelite Spirituality – The Carmelite Monks

The Carmelite Monks are people who felt God’s vocation and decided to enter a Carmelite Order. They live isolated, like most monks do. And they try to achieve Union with God by saying a number of prayers daily. And by suppressing their material desires. The only thing they leave in their heart being the burning love for God, Christ and the Saints.

In conclusion, Carmelite Spirituality is a beautiful manifestation of faith in God. The members of The Carmalite Order are loving people. Who try to find their union with God through deep prayers and other spiritual practices. Their virtues are love, kindness, obedience and many more. They are kind and helping people, who decided to live for God, giving up their desires and needs.
